Extreme Home Living

So am tired and cranky today. After adding two kids to our family in the past three months, who wouldn't be?? I am still in limbo. I don't know if the kids are my kids or will officially be my kids anytime in the future. Collectively called, "the babies" we are glad they came, but do feel completely out of our league at times. I have a whole new respect for foster parents. Oh, yeah. I am one. But for people to go through this time and again...and again?? Crazy. We decided as a group that if the psychologists evaluated us instead of the kids within our care, they would deem us all completely nuts. Beyond nuts. Who invites kids in their homes who are not theirs, who are often drug exposed, who have night terrors and food issues, and cry and are angry at the world? Children who don't trust anyone, let alone you, and push every button you never knew you had?? Not just once, but several times. A day. An hour. Um, yeah. That is what i am going through right now. And oh, by the way, do you want to adopt?? SURE! Crazy is not the right word. Insane, a little closer to what is actually going on in my head.

Add to that the husband who has been between jobs for a month and the other four kids i got, the japanese foreign exchange student living with us....AND my teen son's girlfriend who thinks this is her second home?? Extreme Home living. That is what i am going to call it. And you thought John and Kate plus 8 was interesting....

DATING = INTERVIEW (Language Lesson #1- Follow UP)

I used to tell my hubby that since we are the only two in the relationship, we get to define what that means for us. Think: "In the World, but not Of the World." Anyway, the point is that WE define what certain words mean to us. If Dating means to most of the World that you sleep with everyone you go on a date with, then that potentially poses a problem for me. "The World", Status quo, or whomever may hold that view, but in my house, DATING = INTERVIEW. At sixteen, dating means you admit you have mutual interest or at least acknowledge that the person has interest in you and you are willing to give them a chance. It means, you go out to lunch with them and get to go on 'group dates'. It means, through your friendship, you have determined that he is 'date-able'. Since you are maintaining emotional distance, you are not texting non-stop and talking on the phone until the wee hours. Phone calls end at 9pm. It doesn't mean to 'kiss to find out if...

God's Heartbeat.....

As I have entered into a world recently that many are unaware of, I have become convinced that I should speak up.      Foster children are the invisible children around us.   My message to you is that more families or couples in our churches need to nominate themselves to become foster parents.   Not because they have time.   Not because they are in the perfect place in their lives.   Not because they are waiting for God to ‘tell’ them.   I think we need more people to take radical, preemptive leaps of faith, for the sake of these children.   I think we need to stop more often take notice of the need and wonder what Jesus thinks of the children in foster care. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven.” (Matt 9:13)    and  we are instructed to pray, “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, on Earth as it is Heaven,” I sometimes wonder if we have the a...

MY STORY- Never an option. (side note)

My best friend at the time had a great relationship with her mom. We had both got accepted to a great university and before i found out i was pregnant, we had been scheming about how to be roommates. After the big news, her mom suggested i have an abortion. "A baby will ruin your life!" she told me, "I can take you down there, we won't have to tell your mom." I know this was said with the best of intentions. But i had seen my mom pregnant with my younger brothers. I watched her belly grow and her ease into breastfeeding. My mom used talked to me about abortion and how God 'knows us from the moment of conception." She even told me that if she was ever raped, she would keep the baby. If she was so concerned about seeing the father's face in her child for the rest of her life, she said, she would give it up for adoption. It just wasn't the baby's fault. Thank you, mom. Lesson Learned for Talking with Teens: TALK TO YOUR KIDS. If you don't...
